How to Safely Install Holiday Decorations on Your Roof
You might be putting up holiday decorations to finally win that community contest this year. Or to leave them out until the new year because the holiday season is needlessly short—we don’t judge.
You’re putting up decorations because you either enjoy them or you enjoy the process.
Either way, you must follow the proper safety precautions to ensure that your decorations can be enjoyed for years.
Assess Your Roof and Decorations
Check the condition of your roof. Is there any damage or weak spots that could be hazardous to you? Any moss or lichens that could cause you to slip? Remove these spots before you begin, and then walk carefully to avoid stepping on fragile parts of the roof.
It could be time for a roof repair or replacement if you notice vulnerable areas on your roof during this process.
Consider the size and type of your decorations before proceeding. Can your roof hold these decorations but, more importantly, is it sturdy enough that you feel comfortable walking around?
Preparing for Installation
Gather the necessary tools and equipment, whether hooks, a hammer, a pair of sturdy boots, tape, or an extension cord.
Never install your roof decorations during bad weather, even if you put off the installation process until the last minute. Opting to do so could make the process longer and more difficult, but most certainly more dangerous. This goes for all holidays—there have been snowstorms in our area in October!
Use Safe Installation Methods
Use a stable ladder that is the appropriate height for your roof.
Or, explore safer options like telescoping poles or extendable hooks for those hard-to-reach areas.
Have someone else assist you while installing decorations. An extra hand is rarely bad, especially when it could mean the difference between you getting injured or not.
Securing Decorations Properly
Choose non-damaging fasteners that won’t pierce your shingles, like clips and hooks that won’t cause permanent damage to your roof or gutters.
Ensure decorations are tightly secured to withstand wind and weather—mainly the extremely high winds that periodically hit our area.
Handling Electrical Connections
Only use lights specifically designed for outdoor use to prevent potential hazards. Indoor lights aren’t suitable for the weather and animals that are outside.
Inspect all electrical connections for any damage before plugging in the lights. Don’t connect too many decorations to one circuit to prevent electrical fires. Aging or animals can cause fraying or deterioration, so it is essential to repair or replace your lights to avoid mishaps.

Don’t let a faulty roof keep you from the holiday joy.
